Love Happy Hour - Affordable Halloween Wines - LA Happy Hours - Los Angeles Happy Hours, CA

The fall chill is definitely in the air. Sans the vivid and colorful changing leaves that shower most other states, LA relies mostly on the temperature drop and autumn fashion trends to remind us the seasonal change - that’s why I get serious when it comes to holiday decorating, especially when it comes to Halloween. The more colorful, textural, scented, tasty and sexy the décor is, the more excited I get. So this year I’m planning a Spookapalooza Halloween party and I want to have the best tricks and treats on the block, so I did a little research on some hauntingly good wines with some killer-looking labels. Boo ha-ha!

Gnarly Head grapes are grown in the city of Lodi, California and get their name from the 35-80 year-old gnarly looking vines from which they are grown. Gnarly Head wine, although mostly known for their Zinfandel, also produce other flavorful varietals such as Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Pinot Grigio. The Zinfandel usually runs anywhere from $9.50-12 a bottle.

Twisted wine has a label to match its name; dark twisted limbs strike an eerie pose on the 6 different varietals produced by this winery. The Cabernet Sauvignon is medium-bodied with hints of blackberry and vanilla and will only cost you around $8.

Dearly Beloved Forever Red has a skeletal label that screams scary. The Mexican folk art-inspired design on the bottle reminds me Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The best part about this wine - it costs $6.99 at your local Trader Joe’s and has a blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, Carignane & Grenache.

Another full-bodied Zinfandel from Lodi created by the Phillip brothers is7 Deadly Zins. Supposedly, the two brothers related the name from their catholic school upbringing. The Zinfandel has a kick with an alcohol content of 15% and boasts flavors of spice, pepper and berries. You can swoop this bottle up at Target this week for $12.99.

So whether you’re looking to summon the spirits or you just want to get into the Halloween spirit, these wines will add an affordable spook factor to any party.

Sundays and Mondays happen to be my 2 favorite days to go out. I LOVE avoiding the chaotic crowds on Fridays and Saturdays that usually cause me to wait in long lines or have multiple drinks spilled on me. As appealing as those nights were in my early twenties, I have completely moved on. Is it coincidence that NFL Sundays and Monday night football fall on the same days? Absolutely. But, since I will usually be out anyway and I like the occasional game watching big, strong men in tight clothes, I figured I’d tackle the bars with the best deals in town. So no matter who loses the game, I’m always WINNING.

Morton’s Steakhouse is a wondrous gem of a restaurant located next to the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. Not only does Morton’s offer an amazing food and wine selection and early and late night happy hour, but now you can enjoy your football game with some specials prices, too. On Sundays and Mondays nights while the games air, you can enjoy specially priced Bar Bites for $6 or $7 and select beverages starting at just $5 – score!

Tekila in Hollywood rocks Margarita Mondays and Tacos Tuesdays, but now during the NFL games on Mondays and Sundays they’ve added some more specials to their roster. For the two days during the games, $3 mimosas and $15 beer pitchers are served, but for the serious deal, pay $25 and get their game package: a pitcher of beer, 12 wings and 6 tacos. Ole, baby.

Chelsea Bar and Lounge in Hermosa Beach offers some NFL incentives as well. In addition to a sparkling ocean nearby, this beach bar serves $9 Bud Light pitchers all day long!

Canal Club in Venice has extended happy hour specials during NFL games including a $20 pitcher and wings combo (pitcher of Blue Moon and an order of barbeque chicken wings). Canal club’s regular happy hour begins daily at 5pm and goes until close Sunday-Wednesday.

If you are looking for a serious sports bar, then Leo’s All-Star Sports Bar and Grill is your place. Located in La Crescenta, Leo’s grills up $1 sliders and has $9 pitchers of Bud during Monday Night Football.

TASTE - HAPPY HOUR - MELROSE

TASTE on Melrose Happy Hour
 By Maren Swanson

Dear Love,

You’ve heard me mention this before – I love happy hours in my neighborhood. So when I heard TASTE restaurant on Melrose was offering all day and night happy hour over the Labor Day weekend, I practically ran over.  After many previous drive-bys, I had noticed that TASTE had a quaint, covered patio so I hoped this place could be the perfect reprieve to my Melrose Trading Post sweat-athon.

My happy hour friend and I drove up and found metered parking conveniently located directly in front of the restaurant (and next to valet). I always wonder if that really pisses the valet guys off? Oh well, it makes me super happy AND it’s a holiday so my parking is taken care of by the City of West Hollywood!

The happy hour drink menu was long and strong with options. Strong, ohh that sounded good.  I think the server read our minds and suggested we get the TASTE Coolers ($6) with Captian Morgan’s rum, Malibu and mint. “Malibu?” I concernedly asked. I explained that I didn’t like my cocktails too sweet and...he explained that he was the bartender – score! Boy, was he right on the money. The Coolers were the perfect companions to the weary and dehydrated travelers. Beers go for $3, wine $3.50-4.50 and you can order classic martini with olives for only $5.

After a few long sips, we had built up and appetite and ordered off their $3.25 – 5.25 appetizer menu: White Truffle Mac n’ Cheese, Carne Asada Pizzetta, Chicken Lettuce Wraps and Kobe Meatballs. The pizzetta had a Latin twist, with big slices of carne asada and spoonfuls of pico de gallo on top. The Chicken Lettuce Wraps were served in Romaine blankets with a lemongrass vinaigrette on the side; they were light and simple. We also liked the Kobe meatballs, but hands down the Mac n’ Cheese stole our hearts. It was dreamy-creamy and we found slices of real truffle throughout the melted dish.

I called TASTE the other day to confirm the happy hour information and I was delighted to hear that they have extended the happy hour hours - looks like I may turn into a regular. Bottom line: this place delivered great food, drinks and service. TASTE got my vote, and if I can walk off the extra calories there and back, I’m one happy hour camper.

XXOO,

Maren
