Love Happy Hour - Hoppy Holidays: Christmas Beers that Add Cheer

Christmas is right around the corner and luckily, select breweries are getting in the holiday spirit too with special release beers. Tip: these seasonal selections would be perfect stocking stuffers! Since most of the listed brews below are only available for a limited time, hurry up and collect as many Christmas beers as you can before it's too late.

1. Sierra Nevada's Christmas Ale

Originallly brewed in 1981, Sierra Nevada's Christmas Ale is an IPA style beer with notes of pine and citrus. This Christmas ale has gotten great reviews all around and I would definitely spike my next roast with it. ABV: 6.80%

2. Samuel Adam's White Christmas

Samuel Adams is known for it's seasonal beer and its White Christmas beer is no exception. Not only do I love the movie White Christmas, but I also have a new love for this beer. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg and orange peel, this white ale even smells great. ABV: 5.8%

3. Anchor Brewing's Christmas Ale

Available from November to mid January, Anchor Brewing's Christmas Ale has a classic label design featuring the California White Fur drawn by local San Francisco artist, James Stitt (the label and recipe change every year). 2013's Christmas ale recipe is rich, dark and laced with spices. ABV: 5.5%

4. Gritty McDuff's Christmas Ale

Something tells me Santa wouldn't mind the occasional swap of beer for milk because he has plenty of designated drivers, right? Well, if you'd like to leave a Christmas beer for the man in the red suit, then Gritty McDuff's Christmas Ale is the perfect solution. Malty in taste, this well-rounded brew is already wrapped for the occasion with Santa's mug shot right on the front. ABV: 6.2%

5. Shiner's Holiday Cheer

If you are serious about holiday hops, then Shiner's Holiday Cheer beer is right up your ale alley. Holiday Cheer is a dark, wheat ale brewed with Texas peach and roasted pecans. The finish is slightly fruity and the nostalgic label warms my heart. ABV: 5.4%

6. Abita's Christmas Ale

From the same brewery that brought you Purple Haze, Abita now makes their own version of a Christmas Ale. Abita's Christmas Ale is is an American brown ale available in November and December and pairs great with holiday foods like gingerbread or spiced nuts. IABV: 5.5%

Nigori Sake: Sayuri by Hakutsuru

By: Maren Swanson

When I try something I don't like, my mind usually stays set. Listen, I am VERY open-minded. I will try almost everything once, but like Head & Shoulders says, "you never have a second chance to make a first impression." This is how I used to feel about Nigori Sake - until last week.

I hit up my local Gelson's the other day for wine and then had a sudden urge to switch it up. I drink wine all of the time and suddenly, my palette was crying out for something new. Beer, bourbon, vodka? No. Been there, done that. So, I decided to focus on sake and of course, the sakes on sale caught my eye. I glanced at the small batch of options on the shelf and kept returning to the same bottle: Sayuri.

Sayuri translates to "little lily." The bottle is frosted pink and splashed with flowers - so feminine in its design. And where had a heard that name before? Oh, right - everyone at the sushi joint I worked at asked me if we carried it and it was the name of one the geishas in Memoirs of a Geisha (I'm a big fan of the book and the movie). In a way, part of me felt obligated to buy it for all of these reasons.

Once I had brought my bottle home, I made sure it was extra cold before I tried it, and then I started reminiscing about my previous Nigori experiences. Nigori is usually referred to as "unfiltered" or "cloudy" sake and it tends to taste sweeter than most hot or cold sake on the market. Nigori is growing in popularity right now and many sake companies are even starting to make some of them fruit-flavored (strawberry, yuzu). It's texture and color used to throw me off (milky - catch my drift?), and I don't like my beverages too sweet so, I steered clear of it for a while - no pun intended.

Now to actually tasting the Sayuri! It wasn't love at first sip, but probably because my brain was a little confused - sort of like that time I kept taking my ex back. ANYWAY…I tried it again. And then again. The flavors weren't as sweet at the Ozeki Nigori (sold at almost every Japanese restaurant) I had tried before and the Sayuri Nigori sake had a unique texture with a fairly smooth finish. The sake also had a subtle dry feel to it with some light fruit tones. Event hough I wasn't completely sold on the Sayuri that moment, I ended going back to Gelson's the next evening for another bottle. Nuff said.

According to Hakutsuru's (Sayuri's Sake Brewing Co) website, Sayori is actually coarsely filtered and I discovered that it is gluten free too. Once you open the bottle, it should stay drinkable for up to 3 months in the refrigerator. If you are planning on purchasing a bottle or Sayuri or any Nigori sake for that matter, always shake the bottle before pouring so that the rice sediment at the bottle can disperse evenly and make it cloudy. If you usually play it safe as a sake drinker, I recommend stepping out of your safe zone and giving this Nigori a chance. Kanpai!

Love Happy Hour - Taco Fan? Tacolandia! Hollywood Palladium

Los Angelinos, do you have a favorite taco stand, truck, or restaurant? There are so many terrific taco options in LA – we know! Well if you love tacos, then you are gonna love the newest annual event hitting Los Angeles this SundayTacolandia. LA Weekly’s Tacolandia pays homage to Los Angelinos favorite food, the Taco with over 30 taco “artists” from LA to the OC (Baja, too) coming together to provide Tex-Mex tonguegasms to our eager, anticipating mouths.

The June 23rd celebration includes music, food, a tequila garden and tons of tacos - duh! Festivities begin at noon at the Hollywood Paladium and run until 5pm with ticket prices starting at $20. If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, beware – word’s out that Tacolandia is sold out, so mark your calendars for next year. But don’t despair, LoveHappyHour.com has your favorite Mexican cuisine spots covered with incredible taco happy hours to please your palate.

Marix has been a staple for an amazing happy hour in West Hollywood with their remarkable “Street Tacos.” On Taco Tuesday, Marix features all-you-can-eat tacos for $8.95. I don’t know about you, but I can eat A LOT of tacos. Marix also offers happy hour Monday through Friday from 4pm-7pm with new skinny margarita options, too.

Marix Street Tacos

Another taco bar worth checking out is Candela Taco Bar located just south of Wilshire on La Brea. Candela’s taco bar prices start at just $2 and on Wednesdays they offer $1 tacos all night long. $3 Margarita Mondays, daily happy hour and 2 for 1 entrees on Tuesdays just sweeten the deal.

El Carmen on 3rd Street features combination taco plates during happy hour for only $6; choose from tacos de papas (potatoes), carnitas or chicken. El Carmen’s “hora de fiesta” runs Monday through Friday from 5pm- 7pm, featuring $2 guacamole and my personal favorite, $4 ceviche.

The taco fest, Tacolandia may be sold out, but in Los Angeles you never have to be without your favorite Mexican dish. Oh, and remember to eat your tacos responsibly. Overconsumption of delicious meat, toppings and hot sauce can lead to a “carne coma.”

Love Happy Hour - Lazy Ox Canteen Happy Hour: Take Two (Downtown Los Angeles)

The old adage goes: "two heads are better than one," and for me, that applies to happy hour too. Rumors of great food and drinks were put to rest last week when I visited the quaint Downtown Los Angeles restaurant Lazy Ox Canteen. The verdict: Lazy Ox Canteen in Little Tokyo has a happy hour that I would hit twice.

Owner Michael Cardenas, from IDG (BOA, Katana, Sushi Roku) has created a delicious dining retreat, attracting neighborhood regulars and newcomers looking for a casual atmosphere with flavorful food. You may also notice that the wine list (organized by General Manager Drew Myers) has its own personality, featuring boutique and international selections that are scarce on most restaurant menus, and recently they have also started making their own sparkling drinks.

But back to happy hour. Lazy Ox Canteen offers two happy hours: Monday through Friday, 5pm to 7pm and Sunday through Thursday, 10pm until close. Happy hour specials include half off beer on draught, house red and white wines and selected small plates. Some of the selected small plates that I adored included Country Crouton (grilled ciabatta, risotto, local honey, hazelnuts) and Eggplant Mutabal (roasted eggplant, cucumber, pomegranate, o.d. grapes, pine nuts). You can also order fun bar bites like Porn Bread and Pig Ear Chicharrones.

Country Crouton

So if your'e in the mood for a great Gastropub with some unique and tantalizing tapas, give Lazy Ox Canteen in Little Tokyo a try. And if you enjoy it, you'll get double the love.

Note: Check out our first review of Lazy Ox Canteen by The Food Pervert.

Love Happy Hour - Pour Play - "The Spring Break" Cocktail with Kumquats

The Spring Break Cocktail

The Spring Break Cocktail
March 8th, 2013
by Maren Swanson

Spring is just around the corner, and what better way to say hello to warmer days and sunshine than toasting to a fresh cocktail made with the fruits of the season. I cannot tell a lie - this is my favorite cocktail recipe to date. "The Spring Break" is refreshing, citrusy, vibrant and…addicting. The warmer the days become, the more you'll be busting out the muddler and on a mission!

Kumquats are an Asian gem; small, flavorful fruit filled with a sour-citrus punch and encased in a sweet and succulent skin. These olive-sized orange cousins brighten up "The Spring Break" cocktail and serve as a tasty snack, too. Most people are surprised to find out that you can eat the kumquat in its entirety - just be careful of the seeds!

I found kumquats at my local Trader Joe's for around $3. Before you muddle them in the drink, slice them in half and remove the seeds with a fork. Muddle the kumquat halves with the simple syrup, and then layer the rest of the ingredients in a martini shaker. Shake vigorously and pour your drink over fresh ice (including the muddled kumquats). Top with sparkling lemon water. Garnish with fresh basil. As you are enjoying the drink, don't forget to nibble on the vodka soaked kumquat treats.

I guarantee this drink will be one of your new favorites! Plus, it's a great alternative Easter cocktail to serve instead of mimosas. Happy Spring Break!

"The Spring Break" cocktail recipe:

1 1/2 oz vodka
3/4 oz triple sec
1 oz Pom or Pom Lite juice
3 kumquats
1/2 oz simple syrup
lemon sparking water
ice
-------------------------------
muddle kumquats with
simple syrup
layer remainding ingredients in
a martini shaker
pour over fresh ice
top off with lemon sparkling water
garnish with fresh basil

Muddle the kumquat halves with the simple syrup, and then layer the rest of the ingredients in a martini shaker. Shake vigorously and pour your drink over fresh ice (including the muddled kumquats). Top with sparkling lemon water. Garnish with fresh basil. As you are enjoying the drink, don't forget to nibble on the vodka soaked kumquat treats.

I guarantee this drink will be one of your new favorites! Plus, it's a great alternative Easter cocktail to serve instead of mimosas. Happy Spring Break!
